Big 12 announces 2016 women's basketball schedule

NORMAN — The Big 12 Conference announced its women's basketball schedule on Friday, completing the University of Oklahoma's 2015-16 slate. The Sooners will open Big 12 play Dec. 30 at the Lloyd Noble Center against Kansas.

Head coach Sherri Coale's squad will play their other eight home conferences games Jan. 10 vs. Kansas State, Jan. 20 vs. Texas Tech, Jan. 27 vs. West Virginia, Feb. 3 vs. Oklahoma State, Feb. 6 vs. TCU, Feb. 14 vs. Texas, Feb. 22 vs. Baylor and Feb. 27 vs. Iowa State.

OU will play its nine road conference games Jan. 2 at Baylor, Jan. 6 at TCU, Jan. 16 at Oklahoma State, Jan. 23 at Texas, Jan. 30 at Iowa State, Feb. 9 at Kansas State, Feb. 17 at West Virginia, Feb. 20 at Kansas and Feb. 29 at Texas Tech.

Oklahoma City and the Chesapeake Energy Arena will host the 2016 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships, March 4-7 (Friday-Monday). This marks the fourth time that the Big 12 Women's Basketball Championships will be played in Oklahoma City where the tournament will remain through the 2018-19 season.

The Sooners return 10 letterwinners, including 2015 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Peyton Little and 2015 Big 12 Freshman of the Year Gabbi Oritz, from last season's NCAA Tournament squad that finished second in the league. OU brings back 81 percent of its scoring, 80 percent of its rebounding and 85 percent of its assists from last year's team that posted a 21-12 record and a 13-5 mark in conference play.

The Big 12 schedule features a full double-round robin format for the fifth consecutive season. Last year, the Big 12 sent five teams to the NCAA Tournament and is the only one of its peer conferences to play a full double-round robin format.
