NORMAN - A banner academic year for the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team continued last week.
Nine members of the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team garnered Scholastic All-America honors from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). That total ties the 2009 squad for the most selections in a single season in program history.
2015 marks the ninth straight year that OU has captured at least five spots on the Scholastic All-America listing. Under head coach K.J. Kindler's leadership, Oklahoma gymnasts have earned a total of 57 academic awards from the NACGC/W.
Departed senior Rebecca Clark led the way for Oklahoma with her third career Scholastic All-America honor. Clark had previously earned the distinction in 2012 and 2013. A 2013 CoSIDA Academic All-American, Clark also earned a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship this year.
Joining Clark as multi-year winners were rising junior Chayse Capps (2014, 2015) and incoming seniors Maile'ana Kanewa (2014, 2015) and Haley Scaman (2013, 2015).
Graduated senior Haley Sorensen and incoming junior Kara Lovan took home their first career Scholastic All-America award in the listing. She was joined by first-year winners Stefani Catour, Samantha Craus and Brenna Dowell.
Oklahoma's academic performance has flourished under Kindler. Nine Sooners snagged Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2015 to tie for the best total under Kindler. Oklahoma also posted a program-record team grade-point average of 3.42 in the fall 2014 semester.
In addition, the Sooners were one of three OU programs to be recognized for posting a perfect 1,000 multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) in May. The gymnastics team was one of 24 programs from the Big 12 Conference to be recognized for an APR score in the top 10 percent of all squads within their respective sports.
In order to earn NACGC/W Scholastic All-America honors, a gymnast must attain a cumulative or yearly grade-point average of 3.5 or better.
