NORMAN – The University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team had a strong showing this weekend at the 2015 Men's National Qualifier in Colorado Springs, Colo., with four Sooners earning a spot at next month's P&G Championships.
Having a total of 13 athletes is representative of what we do at Oklahoma. We want to raise the potential of each guy to be in contention for national team positions.
Head Coach Mark Williams
Current Sooners Colin Van Wicklen, Danny Bernardini, Michael Reid and Hunter Justus all qualified for the national competition based on their performance over the weekend.
Van Wicklen posted the highest score of the four with an overall 87.100, good for sixth, and a qualifying mark of 65 total points on the National Points Ranking System. Twenty points are given for a first-place finish down to one point for a 20th-place finish. The junior from Magnolia, Texas, also placed first in the floor exercise with a score of 15.400 while adding top-five finishes on vault and high bar.
In addition to the four current sooners in competition, two former OU gymnasts also qualified over the weekend. Chris Brooks posted the highest qualifying score of the meet with an 82 and finished second in the overall with a mark of 89.250. Brooks finishes second on vault (15.350), high bar (15.700) and high bar (15.400). Jonathan Horton posted a qualifying score of 64, good for third, and finished fifth in the overall with an 87.400. Horton picked up top-ten finishes on floor (14.850, 6th), rings (15.800, 3rd), vault (14.900, T7th) and parallel bars (15.00, 4th).
OU's six qualifiers will be joined at the national competition by OU alumni Jake Dalton and Steven Legendre, Alex Naddour and current junior Allan Bower, who all earned an automatic bid by virtue of their position on the 2014 U.S. Senior Men's National Team.
Dalton and Legendre also qualified for the P&G Championships last season. Dalton has been named to the national team four times in his career and was a 2012 Olympian. Legendre was recently named Oklahoma's assistant coach after serving as a volunteer assistant during the 2013-14 season.
Three incoming Sooners will also compete in the junior division at nationals next month, making it a total of 13 Oklahoma gymnasts in contention. Peter Daggett and Yul Moldauer earned a spot at the P&G Championships with their place on the Junior Olympic Team and Levi Anderson qualified via a petition. Anderson was injured during the Junior Olympic trials and was unable to compete.
Oklahoma's 13 competitors are the most of any program in the country.
“We're happy to have four athletes qualify after the USA qualifier,” head coach Mark Williams said. “Having a total of 13 athletes is representative of what we do at Oklahoma. We want to raise the potential of each guy to be in contention for national team positions.”
Adding to Van Wicklen's impressive weekend performance, Justus, a sophomore, posted an overall score of 86.100, good for ninth place, and a qualifying score of 46. The Cyprus, Texas, native posted his best results on rings, where he scored a 14.950 to place seventh. Justus also placed in the top 10 on parallel bars with a 14.450 to tie for eighth.
