NORMAN — Rashard Odomes is the first subject in our summer get-to-know series for men's basketball. The 6-6, 200-pound freshman wing from Copperas Cove, Texas, is a four-star recruit by ESPN and has already turned heads this month in Oklahoma.
On June 6, Odomes scored 37 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the 50th annual Faith Seven high school all-star game in Shawnee. He was 13 for 17 from the field and hit 9 of his 10 free throw attempts in earning Texas team MVP honors in a 132-119 win over all-stars from Oklahoma. The next day he moved in to his Headington Hall dorm on the OU campus and has been focusing on summer school and hoops since.
A Texas Class 6-A All-State selection as a senior at Copperas Cove High School, Odomes averaged 25.2 points, 12.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.7 steals while making 58.3 percent of his field goal attempts. He led the Bulldawgs to a 20-14 overall record and to its first playoffs win in decades. Odomes was also named the District 12-6A MVP.
"We've been getting in some good workouts. It's tough," started Odomes. "I've really got to work hard in order to get some playing time this year. I'm just trying to learn the system right now. (Big 12 Player of the Year) Buddy Hield has been teaching me a lot of things and has been real helpful throughout the whole process. I'm trying to get used to the flow and the rhythm. The coaches have really been helping me correct the mistakes I've been making."
