NORMAN – No. 5/4 Oklahoma (44-7) scored all of its runs in the first three innings as the Sooners run-ruled Utah Valley (16-37) in five innings, 13-0, Saturday night.
It was the first time the schools had met since OU swept two games against UVU back in 2006. The Sooners have now won all three games against the Wolverines, winning by a combined score of 46-8.
The Sooners, who were wearing pink jerseys for their annual Pink Game, posted their 22nd run-rule win and 17th shutout of the season in front of an announced crowd of 1,697 fans. It was the largest crowd so far in the 2015 season, the second largest for a regular season game at Marita Hynes Field and the fifth largest ever at the facility.
The most positive takeaway of the game was that of junior starter Kelsey Stevens. After battling control issues in recent weeks, Stevens appears to have righted the ship after two straight solid performances.
“It feels really good," Stevens said after the game. "I feel like I'm getting my rhythm back, and it's nice getting some innings in. The more innings I get the more confident I get, and it's nice that my team has my back, as well. I feel good out there.”
After allowing two runs in 5.0 innings Thursday night at North Texas, Stevens threw 4.0 scoreless innings Saturday, giving up just two hits. She struck out five and walked four to run her record to 9-1 on the year. She has won each of her last two starts after not factoring in the decision in any of her previous five starts.
"Kelsey (Stevens) on the mound, we just have to keep going to her and keep giving her opportunities to get grounded and settled," Oklahoma head coach Patty Gasso said. "It's exciting to see her start to look like her old self. There is still some work to do, but we're trying to give her that opportunity.”
Oklahoma wasted little time giving Stevens support as it jumped on the Wolverines, scoring four runs in the first inning.
Senior Lauren Chamberlain drew the first of three walks in the game with one out before fellow senior Shelby Pendley belted a two-run home run to the bleachers in right field. It was her team-leading 24th of the year and No. 84 in her career, breaking a tie for sixth place on the all-time list with Louisiana-Lafayette's Danyele Gomez (2003-06).
Freshman Paige Parker kept up the offensive pressure as she singled through the right side on the very next pitch after Pendley's homer. Junior Erin Miller was then hit by a pitch before junior Kady Self singled through the right side to fill the bases. Senior Georgia Casey came to the plate with the bases full and pulled a 2-2 pitch down the left field line for a two-run double, giving OU the 4-0 lead.
The Sooners added to their lead with a two-run second inning.
Freshman Nicole Pendley led off the frame with a single through the left side. After Chamberlain drew her second walk and a flyout, Parker was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the second consecutive inning. Miller then walked to force in a run to make it 5-0. Junior Kady Self followed Miller's walk with a chopper to third. Morgan Smith fielded it and got the force at third, but Chamberlain was safe on a play at the plate to extend the lead to 6-0.
A seven-run third inning put the game out of reach for OU and put the run-rule into place.
Casey led off by reaching on an error and junior Whitney Ellis followed with a single. Freshman Kelsey Arnold, who ended the top of the third by starting a 5-3 double play, drove in Casey with a double to left center. Nicole Pendley then brought home Ellis and Arnold with a two-run single up the middle, putting OU on top 9-0.
Later in the inning with Nicole Pendley on second and Chamberlain on first and two outs, Miller dropped a double into left field to score Pendley. Self followed that at-bat with a two-run single to left field, making it 12-0 for the Sooners. Casey completed the scoring next as she also singled to left, driving in Self, who had advanced to second on the throw following her single in the previous plate appearance.
Utah Valley had its best scoring chance in the fourth as the Wolverines loaded the bases with two outs, but Stevens got Tiani Hensley to fly out to junior Paris Townsend in left field.
Shelby Pendley came on in relief of Stevens in the fifth as she recorded a pair of strikeouts, then worked around an error by fielding a comebacker for the final out.
The teams will close out the two-game series Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
