STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team suffered its worst loss in a decade with a 24-2 non-conference defeat at No. 9 Oklahoma State in front of 3,111 at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium on Tuesday night. The Sooners, who dropped to 22-13, last gave up 20 runs at Mississippi in the NCAA Oxford Regional on June 5, 2005.
An eight-run inning put the Cowboys (23-9) in front and their offense didn't quit throughout the game; adding four in the third, three in the fourth, five in the fifth and four in the sixth.
Oklahoma had an opportunity to score first with back-to-back singles from junior second baseman Kolbey Carpenter (Waco, Texas) and redshirt-senior right fielder Taylor Alspaugh (Broken Arrow, Okla.). Electing to play small-ball, the Sooners failed to get down a sacrifice-bunt and then two strikeouts from OSU right-hander Conor Costello (2-0) ended the OU threat.
A single by second baseman Tim Arakawa and an error put the first two on for the Cowboys. Costello knocked in both with a double to right-center. The Sooners prevented a run from coming home on a squeeze play as senior lefty Jeffrey Curran (Long Beach, Calif.) (0-1) scooped a ball home for out number-one. That did little to deter Oklahoma State, which went on to total six hits in the inning, including a two-run home run by Arakawa for the seventh and eighth runs of the inning.
Oklahoma staged a brief, two-out rally in the top of the second. Junior catcher Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, Man.) grounded a single through the left side and the Sooners got on the board with a two-run home run by senior third baseman Joshua Ake (Readington, N.J.). Carpenter and Alspaugh each followed with their second hit of the night, but that was it for OU in the frame.
This weekend, Oklahoma heads to Texas for a three-game, Big 12 series. Game one is set for Friday, April 10 at 7:00 pm.
