IRVING, Texas – University of Oklahoma baseball's Kolbey Carpenter was named the Big 12 Player of the Week as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. Carpenter, a junior infielder and outfielder from Waco, Texas, became the first player in Sooner history to earn the award three times in the same season and just the third player in the league's 19-year history to earn it three times in a season. Kansas' Robby Price did so in 2010 and Texas A&M's Blake Stouffer in 2007.
Oklahoma has claimed the Player of the Week award in five if the 10 weeks this season. Carpenter previously earned the honor on February 23 and March 23, while Sheldon Neuse was recognized on March 9 and Anthony Hermelyn on April 6. Jake Elliott also claimed the Pitcher of the Week honor on February 16.
Carpenter hit .421 and slugged .684 with a .450 on-base percentage for an impressive 1.134 OPS in a four-game stretch for the Sooners that resulted in a second straight road series win in conference play. He went 8-for-19 at the plate with three multi-hit games, while scoring five runs, driving in three and adding two doubles and a team-leading seventh home run.
Against West Virginia, Carpenter went 7-for-14 beginning with a 2-for-4 night on Friday, including a two-run home run in the seventh that stood as the only two runs of the game. On Saturday, he doubled twice, while going 2-for-5 with two runs and a RBI. In the finale, Carpenter went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a walk. He started at three different positions this week with two at second base, one in left field and one at first base.
