NOTES AND NUMBERS FOR WEEK 13
LEADER OF THE PACK
For the first time in program history, the Oklahoma women's gymnastics team is the nation's No. 1 seed heading into NCAA competition. The Sooners have been ranked first in the nation for every week of the regular season dating back to Jan. 12 and hold an NCAA-best regional qualifying score (RQS) of 197.895. OU's RQS surpasses its 2014 mark of 197.775 entering regional competition; in addition, the Sooners are the nation's first team to spend the entire regular season ranked No. 1 since Florida in 2012.
WIN AND ADVANCE
Oklahoma's NCAA regional history under head coach K.J. Kindler has been strong: since 2010, the Sooners own five consecutive regional championships and 16 individual event championships. OU captured the 2014 NCAA Minneapolis Regional title with a 197.725, including a program-record score of 49.700 on vault. Maile'ana Kanewa took the regional crown on vault (9.975), while Chayse Capps tied for top honors on beam (9.9).
THE BIG 11
OU captured a nation-leading 11 regular season All-America honors from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches / Women (NACGC/W) last week. Of Oklahoma's six-member balance beam lineup, five Sooners captured first or second team accolades on the event—more than any team on any single event in the nation. In addition, both junior Haley Scaman and true freshman Brenna Dowell earned All-America honors on two separate events.
SWEPT IT
In addition to becoming the first-ever Big 12 program to win four straight conference titles, Oklahoma swept through the conference award listing for the second time since 2013. K.J. Kindler won her ninth career Big 12 Coach of the Year honor and Haley Scaman was named Big 12 Gymnast of the Year for the second consecutive season. True freshmen Ali Jackson (Event Specialist of the Year) and Brenna Dowell (Newcomer of the Year) also captured end-of-the-year accolades from the conference.
QUICK HITS
• The Sooners have posted at least one of their season high scores on every event over the last month, including three of their top five scores on beam in the month of March alone.
• Of OU's nine team members to earn an event title this season, five are members of the sophomore or freshman class. Haley Scaman leads all Sooners with 17 individual titles on the season and has earned the highest total on both vault and floor. Scaman and Brenna Dowell are the only two Sooners to have won at least one title on three separate events.
• Oklahoma is the nation's only team ranked in the top ten that has never competed an all-arounder this season.
• OU returns six previous NCAA All-Americans in 2015. The group has amassed a total of 11 accolades during their careers, including four-time winner Erica Brewer (UB, BB, AA). She is joined by two-time winners Maile'ana Kanewa (V, FX) and Haley Scaman (V, FX) and honorees Chayse Capps (BB), Rebecca Clark (UB) and Kara Lovan (FX)
• With 289 career victories, head coach K.J. Kindler is within striking distance of her 300th career win in 2015. Should OU win every session of competition from this point onward, Kindler would cross the 300-win mark during the Super Six team finals.
Q&A WITH COACH KINDLER
On if the mentality changes going into NCAAs:
“I'd like to think that it stays the same because for us, it's just another gymnastics meet and we have to do well to move on, of course. But, what's most important is that they continue to build on what they've done this season and if they do that, moving on won't be an issue. For them, I want them to continue apply what they've been working on in the gym and those improvements that we've made. You don't have to emphasize the fact that this is the first round of NCAA – they know it somewhere in the back of their minds. But for us, it's another step to our goal.”
On their focus during the off-week:
“The following Friday, a week after we would have normally had a meet, we did some intrasquading on both bars and beam. We are starting on bars in the competition so we kind of emulate that and just kind of kept them in the mode of competing and practiced our regional timing and all that since it does change in this meet. We tried to keep them in the same rhythm for the most part but also it was a great week to get them a little stronger and kind of beef up the conditioning a little bit and make sure that we keep them strong at the end of the year.”
On the mindset of the final weeks of competition:
“Honestly, we've committed to the whole season this year. I think that beginning to end it was just a different mentality coming off last year and one of our goals was to always be at our best fitness the last four weeks and we've been really focusing on that and making sure they know where they are at personally and how they can get better. As a team, we're just focusing on the next step and we're trying to really build on what we've done all year. They know that they've done a phenomenal job and are in a wonderful position but they also know that each meet is new life. I don't think that we've done anything different in terms of mindset.”
On the challenge of being seeded No. 1:
“I haven't found any differences this year other than that they have been able to take a lot of confidence from it. If you look at the rankings the top six teams are within tenths of each other. This is not where your number one team is blowing people away, this is a close race and though we've been able to hang on to that ranking, it's going to be a close race to the end and they know it. They know it's going to come down to the very last little things and they know that from last year. And we weren't ranked number one going in last year and we were able to win it. Everyone has a chance and so it's up to us to get them in the best place possible to have that kind of night. We're not getting ahead of ourselves, don't take anything for granted and this first meet is a key.”
