AUSTIN, Texas – Junior Kady Self homered twice and freshman Paige Parker finished off a masterful weekend as No. 5/5 Oklahoma swept Texas (27-12, 3-3 Big 12) in a three-game series following a 4-0 win Saturday afternoon.
Now 9-0 in Big 12 play, the Sooners (36-5) have matched the 2000 and 2002 squads for the best start to the conference season in program history. With a win Thursday against Baylor, the 2015 team could be the first OU team to start 10-0 in the Big 12.
The win was the fourth straight for Oklahoma over Texas dating back to the final game last season and their 12th straight overall. The four consecutive wins over Texas, in which OU has scored UT 23-1, marks the longest winning streak in the series for OU since winning six in a row during the 2000 and 2001 seasons.
This weekend marked the fifth time in school annals that the Sooners swept a regular season series from the Longhorns, previously doing so in 2008, 2004, 2001 and 2000. But it was just the second sweep of the Longhorns in Austin (2000).
Parker, making her ninth relief appearance of the season, continued to do what she did all weekend: dominate Texas. Saturday she pitched 7.0 innings of relief and struck out seven while allowing just two walks and two hits as OU recorded its 15th shutout of the year.
In the three-game sweep, Parker did not allow a single run in 16.1 innings in the circle. She struck out 21 batters and allowed just six hits while walking four. She earned two of the three wins and added a save to her stat sheet. Her record on the season stands at 18-3.
Self got the scoring started for OU with a one-out solo homer to left field in the second. OU is now 31-0 when scoring first this season.
Texas threatened to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the first as the first two batters of the game reached on back-to-back walks. That prompted a pitching change as Parker came on in relief. She promptly struck out No. 3 batter Lindsey Stephens, got Mickenzi Krpec to ground into a fielder's choice and fanned Erin Shireman.
The Longhorns had another scoring chance in the third.
Stephanie Ceo led off with a single and moved to second two batters later on a sacrifice bunt. OU opted to intentionally walk Stephens, Texas' leader in nearly every offensive category. With two on, Parker overwhelmed Krpec with a three-pitch strikeout.
In the fifth, OU doubled its lead to 2-0.
With one out, senior Lauren Chamberlain walked on five pitches. After a strikeout, Parker also drew a ball on a 3-1 pitch. Junior Erin Miller then came through with the clutch hit for the Sooners as she pushed a single through the left side and into left field, bringing home Chamberlain.
Self was at it again in the sixth, hitting a solo homer to left center. It was her third career multi-home run game and her second of the season, also homering twice against East Carolina on March 15. She now has nine home runs this season and 15 in her career.
Leading 3-0, senior Shelby Pendley added the exclamation point as she hit a solo home run to right center. It was the 81st of her career and her 62nd as a Sooner, giving her sole possession of second place in Big 12 and school annals. She also has the fourth-most homers in a season in OU history with 21.
Up next for Oklahoma is a mid-week contest at North Texas on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Thursday, second-place Baylor visits Norman for a three-game series.
