NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma baseball makes a quick turnaround this week as its attention heads back to Big 12 play with a three-game series against Kansas. Game one of the series gets underway Thursday night at 6:00 pm.
Oklahoma is 19-12 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 play following a 7-0 shutout-win over Central Arkansas. Junior center fielder Craig Aikin is just five hits away from 200 in his career and leads the Sooners with a .357 batting average. Junior Kolbey Carpenter ranks second on the team at .336 with 23 RBI and a team-high .584 slugging percentage and six home runs. Redshirt-senior right fielder Taylor Alspaugh (.310), sophomore shortstop Sheldon Neuse (.308) and junior Anthony Hermelyn (.300) round out a group of five all hitting .300-or-better. Alspaugh is hitting .450 (9-for-20) in Big 12 games and Neuse has driven in a team-high 28 runs, while going deep five times. Sophomore right-handers Jake Elliott (3-3) and Alec Hansen (3-3) have been mainstays in the OU rotaion, combining for 102 strikeouts in 97 innings of work.
The series opens with a game of baseball bingo for the first 50 fans in attendance plus prizes for each of the winners. Friday will be the first-ever “Bark in the Park” as fans are allowed to bring in their dog to the game. For event details click HERE. The game will be followed by fireworks and a toss under the lights. The weekend concludes with an Easter egg hunt on the field for kids 12-and-under.
Scouting the Jayhawks
Gaining his 400th win at Kansas earlier in the season against Michigan, head coach Ritch Price and the Jayhawks are 10-17 overall and 1-2 in conference. Outfielder Connor McKay leads the team with 19 runs scored and 40 hits, while hitting .364. In the power department, fellow outfielder Blair Beck has hit five home runs with a .584 slugging percentage. Opening up the action on Thursday, KU turns to left-hander Ben Krauth (5-2), who sports a 5.44 ERA.
Oklahoma pitchers have combined to pitch through the sixth 16 times this season, including nine starts through the seventh. Elliott leads the team with six six-plus inning starts and Hansen has four. Last season, OU starters pitched through the sixth 15 times in 58 games.
Oklahoma is well on its way to surpassing its 30-home run total from 2014. Through 31 games, the Sooners have gone yard 25 times, including a team-leading five from Neuse and Carpenter. The Sooners rank second in the Big 12 with 25 home runs and 0.83 per game. Neuse is the team's active career home run leader with 12. Junior left fielder Hunter Haley and Carpenter rank at 11.
