NOTES AND NUMBERS FOR WEEK NINE
OKLA-HOME
The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team covered plenty of ground from Jan. 29 to Feb. 27, competing in six different states across a six week span of away competitions. OU will return to Norman this weekend with a No. 1 national ranking and a 12-0 record under its belt, competing in the Lloyd Noble Center for Senior Night on Friday. The Sooners are 3-0 at home this season and have averaged a 197.7375 in their two home competitions. Oklahoma will enter this weekend ranked first in the country for the eighth consecutive week, extending its program-record streak of weeks at No. 1.
SALUTE TO SENIORS
Friday night will be a special evening for three members of the Oklahoma squad as they compete in their last regular season competition in the LNC. Seniors Erica Brewer, Rebecca Clark and Haley Sorensen enter Friday's meet with a remarkable 103-11-1 career record since their arrival in 2012. The trio aided Oklahoma to three consecutive NCAA appearances during their careers, including a 2013 NCAA Runner-Up finish and the program's first-ever NCAA Championship in 2014.
CO-CHAMPS
The excitement surrounding Friday's meeting between No. 1 OU and No. 3 Florida goes beyond rankings and reputations. Oklahoma's hotly anticipated contest with the Gators will mark the first meeting between the two teams after a wild finish at the 2014 NCAA Championships that saw the two programs finish in a tie for the national title. The Sooners and UF finished last season's Super Six with identical NCAA Championship-record scores of 198.175, marking the first-ever shared national championship in NCAA women's gymnastics history.
BEAM QUEENS
Last weekend's beam rotation for Oklahoma at Illinois was the one the Sooners have been hunting for. OU's lineup hit from top to bottom for a season-best 49.575, the third-best beam score in program history. The score is tied for the second-highest score in the nation this season and was highlighted by a trio of 9.925 performances from seniors Haley Sorensen and Rebecca Clark and sophomore Chayse Capps. Five members of Oklahoma's six-person lineup are ranked in the top 25 nationally this week, led by Capps' No. 1 overall ranking.
QUICK HITS
• Oklahoma earned a nation-leading 17 individual appearances in the rankings this week on vault, bars, beam and floor. No other team owns more than 11 appearances across all four events.
• Junior Haley Scaman has captured or tied for an event title in every meet this season. She owns a team-high 15 titles in 2015.
• OU swept the Big 12 honor listing this week: Haley Scaman was named conference Gymnast of the Week, Haley Sorensen earned her second Event Specialist of the Week distinction and Brenna Dowell was named Newcomer of the Week. Oklahoma has won at least two conference awards every week this season.
• Two current Oklahoma team members own perfect 10.0s this season: Haley Scaman (V) and Brenna Dowell (UB). Scaman now owns four career perfect 10.0 routines (two on FX, two on V), while Dowell became the first true freshman in Oklahoma history to earn a 10.0 on any event with her routine.
• With 285 career victories, head coach K.J. Kindler is within striking distance of her 300th career win in 2015.
Q&A WITH COACH KINDLER
On the importance of a big crowd for Friday:
The crowd directly impacts the enthusiasm of our student-athletes. They totally feed off the energy of the crowd and our team is so excited to compete in front of Sooner fans and perform for them. The more people in the stands, the more pumped up and explosive our team gets. Florida is used to large crowds: last season when we travelled there, they had over 7,000 fans. The more we have, the better we'll perform. The crowd absolutely gives us a competitive edge.
On the end of the regular season:
These are the some of the toughest weeks of the season. We're going to face top notch competition in both Florida and Alabama. Going into the postseason, it's important to know where you are nationally. You reflect on the season and examine where you were strong, where you were weak and where you need to get better so you are in the best position to move forward through the postseason.
In looking at that, it's very important that our team is aggressive and takes plenty to learn from. We've been very consistent all season and I'm looking for them to kind of explode out of the box. We've been very steady—one of the steadiest teams in the country. I'd love to start seeing some highs.
On Ali Jackson's availability:
Ali is going to compete on Friday. She is Tough with a capital T. If she could choose, she would do it all.
