FORT WORTH, Texas – Jeremie Fagnan delivered the knockout blow in the bottom of the 10th to send the University of Oklahoma baseball team home with a 4-3 loss at No. 4 TCU in front of 3,696 at Lupton Stadium, Tuesday night. Fagnan entered as an injury substitute for the Horned Frogs and inherited a 1-2 count with runners on the corners and one out. He promptly lined a base hit into center to plate the game-winning run.
The Sooners led early in the game, but needed to play from behind to force extra innings. Trailing 3-1, junior Kolbey Carpenter (Waco, Texas) and redshirt-senior right fielder Taylor Alspaugh (Broken Arrow, Okla.) opened the eighth with back-to-back singles. A sacrifice-bunt/error plated one run and another came in on a balk to tie the game.
Junior lefty Shawn Hunter (Fort Supply, Okla.) worked a scoreless-eighth and sophomore shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) moved to the mound for a perfect-ninth with a little help from a great diving catch in right-center by Alspaugh.
Oklahoma (17-10) threatened in the top of the 10th with a two-out single by junior Anthony Hermelyn (McKinney, Texas) and a double by Neuse ripped down the right field line, but that was all the Sooners would see reach. TCU (18-4) started its rally in the bottom hald with a one-out single by left fielder Dane Steinhagen on a sharp grounder past Carpenter at second. Another sharp grounder, this one an error at short, put runners on the corners. Austin Wade entered to pinch-hit, but after fouling off a bunt attempt on a suicide-squeeze effort was relieved by Fagnan.
Neuse (0-1) took the loss for Oklahoma in 1.1 innings of work. He surrendered one run on one hit to go with a strikeout. Right-hander Trey Teakell (1-1) got the win for the Horned Frogs despite blowing a save in the eighth. Senior lefty Jeffrey Curran (Long Beach, Calif.) lasted four-plus innings in the start for the Sooners. He allowed three runs on five hits and two weeks and left the game with two runners on base in the fifth. Left-hander Tyler Alexander pitched seven innings of one-run ball for TCU. He gave up six hits and struck out five.
Oklahoma plated the first run of the night in the top of the first. Alspaugh lined a base hit up the middle, followed by an infield-single from junior center fielder Craig Aikin (Coppell, Texas), Alspaugh was sent to the plate from a base hit through the left side by Neuse with two outs.
Alspaugh went 2-for-5 at the dish and scored two runs, while Aikin, Neuse and freshman Kyle Mendenhall (Carlsbad, Calif.) all went 2-for-4.
TCU tied the game with a run in the fourth and took the lead in the fifth with two runs. The go-ahead run was a lead-off home run to left by center fielder Cody Jones, who finished the game 2-for-4 with a double.
The Sooners return to conference action this weekend with a 6:00 pm game at Baylor on Friday, March 27.
