NORMAN – The Oklahoma offense exploded for the third-most runs in program history as the sixth-ranked Sooners (19-3) defeated Iowa, 23-3, in five innings Saturday afternoon at Marita Hynes Field.
The Sooners scored at least five runs in each of the first three innings en route to tying for the third-most runs in a game in program history. The only bigger outputs were a record-35 runs against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Feb. 28, 2014, and 24 runs against Iowa State on April 26, 2013.
Saturday against the Hawkeyes (8-16) seven different OU batters collected at least two hits, including three each for freshman Nicole Pendley and seniors Shelby Pendley and Jessica Vest. The team's hit total of 23 was one off the school record of 24, which had occurred twice previously.
In addition to runs and hits, the Sooners posted or tied season highs in RBI (23), doubles (3) and home runs (4).
The Sooners flexed their muscles in the first inning, sending 15 to the plate in an 11-run frame. It was the most in one inning for OU since scoring 17 in the fourth inning in game two of a doubleheader last year against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Feb. 28, 2014.
The scoring started when freshman Paige Parker hit a two-run single to right field with the bases loaded. After a squeeze bunt from junior Kady Self plated another run, fellow junior Whitney Ellis singled to right center to load the bases.
That brought Vest to the plate. Coming off the Missouri State game on March 8 when she homered for the first time since March of 2013, she connected on a 2-2 pitch for her first career grand slam to the bleachers in left field. Vest finished the game with a career-high three hits and three runs scored.
Two batters later, Nicole Pendley hit her fifth home run of the season with a solo shot to left field. Leading 8-0, junior Erin Miller recorded a two-run single to make it 10-0 before Parker added her second run-scoring hit of the inning to close out the 11-run stanza.
The Sooners wouldn't relent though, as they tacked on five more runs in the second.
After Ellis walked and Vest singled, freshman Kelsey Arnold reached on an infield single to load the bases. Nicole Pendley's two-run double put the Sooners on top 13-0, while later in the frame Miller walked with the bases full to make it 14-0. A fielder's choice from junior Paris Townsend enabled Nicole Pendley to score, while Self picked up another RBI with a single to left field.
Iowa did something in the third that no OU opponent had managed to do in the previous seven games: score a run. The Hawkeyes' two-run third marked the first two runs OU had allowed in its last 41 innings. The team had tied a school record with seven straight shutouts and hadn't allowed a run since the sixth inning against Kentucky on Feb. 21.
Leading 16-3, Oklahoma recorded its seventh 20-run game in program history thanks to a five-run third.
Vest and Arnold singled to start the inning before senior Callie Parsons went back up the middle to drive home Vest. That brought senior Lauren Chamberlain to the plate and she wasted no time in homering for the fifth time in as many games.
The three-run blast came on the first pitch of the at-bat and was Chamberlain's 12th of the year and the 84th of her career. That breaks a tie with Louisiana-Lafayette's Danyele Gomez (2003-06) for fifth on the all-time home run list. Chamberlain is now just six away from tying the all-time mark of 90.
The offense kept coming as Chamberlain's bomb was followed by a solo homer from Shelby Pendley. It was Pendley's fifth of the year and 45th as a Sooner, moving her into sole possession of seventh place in OU annals. In addition, it was her 64th career homer, tying her for 23rd all-time.
Two more runs came home for the Sooners in the fourth thanks to RBI singles from Townsend and freshman Lea Wodach.
The win was credited to Shelby Pendley who came on in relief of OU starter Kelsey Stevens.
Pendley threw the final 2.2 innings and struck out three while allowing four hits and one run. Her record stands at 5-1 on the year.
