NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma baseball team fell to intrastate rival Oral Roberts, 5-1, at L. Dale Mitchell Park, Tuesday night. The loss puts the Sooners at 12-7 on the season, while the Golden Eagles evened their record at 7-7.
Redshirt-junior left-hander Adam Choplick (Denton, Texas) worked around back-to-back singles to start the game and quickly settled in to toss six-shutout innings in a no-decision for Oklahoma. He registered a career-high 10 strikeouts and scattered four hits with only one walk issued.
“[Choplick] threw well,” stated head coach Pete Hughes. “With ten punch-outs and one walk, he was good. He was good and he needs to keep growing. He is really young in this game as far as how much experience he has. Last year was the first year that he really got experience in college baseball. He gets better every outing and that is why we are running him out there and getting his pitch-count going. We want him to learn and develop.”
The two sides were scoreless through the first six innings with the Sooners holding a narrow 5-4 edge in hits. Oral Roberts immediately went to work against the OU bullpen in the top of the seventh with a lead-off double by first baseman Audie Afenir and a bunt-single by left fielder Rolando Martinez to put runners on the corners. Center fielder Emmanuel Forcier delivered the first run of the game on a base hit through the left-side.
After a sacrifice-bunt and a strikeout, Whatley hit a high-bouncing ball over third to drive in two runs and push the score to 3-0.
The Golden Eagles added a run in the fourth with a two-out rally that started with a single from Afenir and ended with a RBI-double from Martinez. Oklahoma got back a run in the bottom half as junior catcher Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, Man.) singled up the middle and was driven in on a double down the left field line by senior third baseman Joshua Ake (Readington, N.J.). The Sooners loaded the bases to bring the potential game-tying run to first base, but left all three runners stranded.
Ake finished the day 3-for-3; his first career three-hit day. Junior catcher Anthony Hermelyn (McKinney, Texas) went 2-for-4.
Oklahoma hits the road in the morning as they head to Hawai'i for a four-game set against the Rainbow Warriors, which begins Thursday at 11:35 pm CT.
