Norman – University of Oklahoma freshman point guard Gabbi Ortiz was tabbed the Phillips 66 Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week following her strong play in wins against both Iowa State and Kansas State.
Ortiz averaged 11.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists in Oklahoma's 2-0 week.
The rookie point guard scored 11 points, had five rebounds and two assists in the Sooner's victory over Iowa State. Ortiz again finished with 11 points, sinking 3-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc and both free throw attempts against K-State. She also handed out two assists and had two rebounds in 37 minutes of play. Ortiz' final 3-pointer versus K-State put the Sooners up for good after the Wildcats had taken a one-point lead with five minutes to play on a 3-pointer of their own. Ortiz responded with her trey on the next play.
This is the second Freshman of the Week honor for the Racine, Wis., native. She also was tabbed the Big 12 Freshman of the Week, Jan. 19.
OU returns to the court on Wednesday, Feb. 11, as it travels to take on the Big 12's top team in No. 3 Baylor. The game is slated for 7 p.m. CT and will be televised by FOX Sports Southwest Plus.
