No. 2 Oklahoma Sweeps FSU for 12th Win

NORMAN –The second-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team picked up its 12th win of the year Saturday with a 4-0 sweep of No. 26 Florida State at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
“We did our job today,” head coach John Roddick said. “There were times when I thought we could have had better intensity, but we have a lot of guys who aren't feeling really well. We wanted to go out and give ourselves an opportunity not to make this a really long match. The guys did that.”
For the third time this season Oklahoma did not allow its opponent to post a single point. OU won the doubles point and then took the first three singles matches to win 4-0. Due to weather and travel concerns, all matches were halted after the Sooners clinched.
The Sooners' toughness was tested early in doubles. Junior Axel Alvarez and senior Dane Webb dropped the first two games of their match at the No. 1 spot, and junior Austin Siegel and freshman Spencer Papa gave up a break in the very first game of their match at No 3. OU was up to the test, taking wins on both courts to put the Sooners up 1-0 headed to singles.
“I thought Florida State had a good chance in doubles,” Roddick said. “They played really well at two and they played great at one and had a chance. If they had won that the match would have gotten very interesting, because the other singles that were on were going to be tough matches and they were competing well. Florida State did a good job of making it tough, but we did a good job closing it out.”
Siegel and Papa, pairing for the second straight dual, took on the Whitehurst brothers, Terrell and Terrance. Despite giving up a break in the first game of the match, Siegel and Papa rallied to win 6-3. The Sooners' new No. 3 team is now 2-0.
At No. 1 doubles, Alvarez and Webb, ranked No. 6, faced the 29th-ranked duo of Benjamin Lock and Marco Nunez. Webb and Alvarez fell behind 2-0 early but picked up a pair of breaks to move the match to 3-2. With FSU serving down 5-6, Webb came up with three huge cross-court forehands that beat Lock down the line to give OU the break, the match and the doubles clinch. Alvarez and Webb are now 10-1 in dual play.
Dane just stepped up. He just made up his mind that that was what he was going to do, and then executed it great.

“Dane just stepped up,” Roddick said. “If you saw the last two points he just put it on his racket and said, 'I'm going to win it here if I can'. You can tell he just made up his mind that that was what he was going to do and then he executed it great. I tell our younger guys to do that all the time and that is a great example of taking control and putting it on your racket whether you win or lose. Usually when you do that it works out well.”
Playing at No. 2 doubles, sophomores Alex Ghilea and Andrew Harris fell to Michael Rinaldi and Cristian Gonzalez 3-6. Harris and Ghilea had been 2-0 before today's match.
Ghilea, ranked No. 56, continued his dominant play with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Gonzalez that took only 57 minutes. The win was Ghilea's 10th in dual play this season, and his second at No. 4 singles.
“He figured out what he had to do to be effective,” Roddick said. “He just kept doing it literally every point. When that happens it is tough if they don't make adjustments or you just do it really well. He did a great job and executed well and didn't let the guys breathe.”
Playing at No. 6 singles, sophomore Jose Salazar gave the Sooners their third point of the dual with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Terrell Whitehurst. Salazar is now 8-5 in dual play.
The clinching point came from a reliable source for Oklahoma. Alvarez, ranked No. 7, delivered a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lock at No. 1 singles to give the Sooners their fourth and clinching point. Alvarez leads the Sooners with 11 wins in dual play. The remaining matches were not finished.
Oklahoma will be back in action Friday night when it travels to Columbus to take on the eighth-ranked Buckeyes of Ohio State at 5 p.m.
