CONROE, Texas – Junior Leslie Miller drove in a career-high five runs as No. 6/4 Oklahoma (14-3) completed a doubleheader sweep of IPFW (0-13) with a 9-0, five-inning win Saturday at the Scrap Yard in Conroe, Texas.
After dispatching the Mastodons earlier in the day, 5-0, the Sooners used a five-run first inning in game two to help send themselves to their sixth shutout of the year and seventh run-rule win.
The offensive linchpin was Miller. The Blanchard, Okla., made her first start of the season as the designated player and finished 2-2 with a walk, double and home run. Her five runs driven in surpassed the four she had last season against Texas Tech on May 4, 2014.
She had a key hit in the Sooners' five-run outburst in the first.
Nicole and Shelby Pendley each drew walks to start the contest. Freshman Paige Parker then went back up the middle to plate Nicole and make it 1-0. After senior Jessica Vest pinch ran for Parker and stole second, juniors Erin Miller and Kady Self each walked to bring home a run and push the lead to 2-0.
Freshman Lea Wodach then extended the lead to 3-0 when she lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. Erin Miller moved to third on the sac fly, while in the subsequent at-bat Self stole second to put two into scoring position. After a pop out, Leslie Miller cranked a double off the wall in left field to clear the bases and enhance the Sooners' advantage to 5-0.
Oklahoma's lead grew to 6-0 in the second when Shelby Pendley doubled to center field and scored two batters later when Erin Miller singled up the middle.
A three-run fourth inning pushed the lead to 9-0 and put the run-rule into effect.
Self led off with a single up the middle and, after a flyout, moved to second when sophomore Macey Hatfield singled to second base. That brought Leslie Miller back to the plate and she mashed a three-run homer to center field. It was her first of the year and the sixth of her career.
The run support aided Parker, who got the start and improved to 5-2 on the season. She threw 3.0 innings with just two hits and two walks allowed. She struck out four and didn't allow a run.
In relief, junior Taylor Hodges made her first appearance of the season to start the fourth. She allowed two hits in her two innings of work, but she did not walk a batter or give up a run as she struck out one.
A positive development for Oklahoma came in the third inning when senior Georgia Casey entered the game as a pinch runner. Casey had missed the previous 15 games after tearing the UCL in her left thumb in the season opener against DePaul. The recovery time from her surgery, which occurred on Feb. 12, was set at 8-12 weeks so she played with a hard cast on her left hand.
Oklahoma closes out the weekend in Conroe, Texas, with a doubleheader against North Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m. with the game airing on SoonerSports.TV as part of the premium package.
