NORMAN – The awards keep on coming for Kanji Oyama, as roadtonationals.com recognized the junior as the Gymnast of the Week after his display on Saturday in OU's record-setting performance against Michigan.
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation also recognized Oyama as its Gymnast of the Week on Tuesday. This latest accolade gives him a sweep in the honors an OU gymnast can receive for a week.
Oyama put on a remarkable show in the individual all-around competition. The junior recorded a score of 91.000, which is the highest score in the country this season and a career best. Oyama's 91.000 puts his name beside the likes of former OU legends Jake Dalton and Steven Legendre for a tie for seventh in the Oklahoma record book.
The Huntington Beach, Calif., native posted five scores above the 15.000 threshold, with his highest coming in a 15.350 on floor exercise. Oyama's only sub-15 score was a 14.950 on the pommel horse, which was a personal-best on the apparatus. The junior set four career-high scores in total on Saturday in the following events: all-around (91.000), high bar (15.200), parallel bars (15.100) and pommel horse (14.950).
The team returns to competition for a home meet against No. 3 Illinois. The Sooners and Illini will square off on Friday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. in McCasland Field House.
