Sooners Show 2016 Skills in Saturday's Scrimmage

December 12, 2015 | Men's Gymnastics

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men's gymnastics team held its annual intrasquad Saturday afternoon inside the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center. The meet marked the first time the 2015-16 Sooners performed new routines in front of fans in preparation for the season.

“We're starting out with a different team,” head coach Mark Williams said. “We aren't the national champions anymore. We have a lot of young guys who are inexperienced and this is just the beginning of things. I like to see that we are making some progress. I wasn't satisfied with what we did today necessarily, but we will have time as we get further in the year. This was a learning experience towards our first meet.”

The Sooners split into two teams, with each sending up five routines per event and the highest three scores counting toward the team's score. The Crimson team of freshman Peter Daggett, freshman Eric Holley, freshman Yul Moldauer, junior Alex Powarzynski, redshirt senior Sergey Resnick, freshman Genki Suzuki and junior Colin Van Wicklen took the win with a total of 266.600. The Cream team of freshman Levi Anderson, junior Allan Bower, junior Thao Hoang, sophomore Hunter Justus, freshman William Kell, senior Kanji Oyama, junior Reese Rickett, and redshirt junior Josh Yee turned in a 264.400.

Both teams started the day on floor with Van Wicklen taking the event title with a score of 15.600. Moldauer began what turned out to be a fantastic day by turning in the second highest score on the event, a 15.450. Bower posted a 15.150, his first of three scores of at least 15.000, to finish third.

Moldauer and Bower were solid again on still rings, posting a 15.200 and 15.050 respectively to lead their teams. On pommel horse, Bower turned in a 15.300 to take the event title while Resnick logged a 14.600 to pace the Cream team. Three Sooners topped the 15-point mark on vault. Van Wicklen and Moldauer both earned a 15.150 and Bower added a 15.100. Moldauer and Powarzynski posted the highest scores on parallel bars with 15.600 and 14.900 respectively. Moldauer took the event title on high bar with a 14.850.

Moldauer's strong day lifted him to the all-around lead with Bower was not far behind in second and Oyama finishing third.

“We wanted to see what our team had,” Bower said. “We just need to clean up some landings and mistakes and we will be good. It was great to have everyone out. We had more fans here this year than last year so we hope everyone is excited to help us defend for ten.”

The Sooners, 2015 NCAA champions and defending Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champions, will begin the regular season on Jan. 16 at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo. OU's first home meet will be Jan. 30 against Iowa and UC Berkeley at 5 p.m. at McCasland Field House.
