NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team held its annual intrasquad Friday night inside a packed Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center. The meet marked the first time the 2015-16 Sooners performed new routines in front of fans in preparation for the season.
“I think tonight shows that the progress is there. We are where we need to be at this point,” OU head coach K.J. Kindler said. “There's a lot of cleaning up to do here and there and learning how to be aggressive on the events like bars and beam - go for those handstands, go for those no-move routines that you see every day in practice.
"There were a lot of great steps today. There were a lot of new people out there, so we saw a lot of people stepping out for the first time. There was a huge crowd here, and we were really excited about that and just to be in front of some fans.”
The Sooners started off the night on vault and were led by senior Haley Scaman and sophomore Ali Jackson, who each registered a 9.9 on the apparatus. Junior Chayse Capps added a 9.825.
Junior McKenzie Wofford scored a team-high 9.9 on bars, and senior Keeley Kmieciak posted a solid 9.875. Junior Reagan Hemry recorded a 9.85 on the event, and freshman Nicole Lehrmann logged a 9.825 in her collegiate debut.
The Sooners then moved to beam where sophomore Natalie Brown performed a beautiful routine to score a 9.95, the highest mark of the night on any event. Kmieciak earned a 9.825 on beam, and junior Chayse Capps and Jackson each received a 9.8.
Floor marked the last event of the night and was the team's best overall performance. Capps registered a team-best 9.9 and junior Charity Jones and Scaman both recorded 9.85s. Three Sooners earned 9.8s in Kmieciak, junior Kara Lovan and Brown.
The Sooners open their season on Jan. 9 in Baton Rouge, La., when they face 2015 NCAA qualifier LSU. The team returns to Norman on Jan. 15 for its home opener against California and TWU. The meet is set for a 6:45 p.m. CT start at the Lloyd Noble Center, and fans can snag season tickets and reserve their seats now.
