PEORIA, Ill. – Gabbi Ortiz and Kaylon Williams scored 14 points apiece as No. 17/24 Oklahoma women's basketball turned in its best defensive performance of the season and raced past Bradley 79-46 Sunday at Renaissance Coliseum.
The Sooners (3-1) shot 47.7 percent from the field (31-65) and hit a season-high 12 3-pointers, including four from Ortiz. The sophomore guard also dished out six assists in 27 minutes.
Williams finished 6 for 6 from the field and tied the team-high with seven rebounds in just 15 minutes of action. Redshirt freshman guard Gileysa Penzo added in a career-high 11 points, all in the second half off the bench.
OU's defense held Bradley (1-2) to just 13 of 57 shooting (22.8 percent) and just 3 of 13 (23.1 percent) from range. The Sooners recorded a season-high seven blocks led by Vionise Pierre Louis' career-best four rejections. The seven blocks by OU were its most since finishing with seven against Bradley in last year's game in Norman. Pierre-Louis also added in seven rebounds for the Sooners off the bench.
Peyton Little finished with nine points, knocking down three shots from behind the arc while Maddie Manning and Derica Wyatt scored eight points apiece, respectively. T'ona Edwards also chipped in eight points off the bench and tied a season-high with six assists.
In the first half, OU held the Braves to 8 for 30 (26.7 percent) from the field. The Sooners knocked down eight 3-pointers in the opening half, while locking down the 3-point line defensively by holding Bradley to just 1 of 6 (16.7 percent) from behind the arc. OU finished the first two quarters 13 of 29 (44.8 percent) from the floor, including eight treys from deep.
The Sooners held their opponent to less than 50 points for the second straight game for the first time since 2013 when OU held Samford to 35 points and Texas Tech to 38 points, respectively. While holding Bradley to a season-low 46 points, OU nearly outscored the Braves in the second half, putting up 45 points in the game's final 20 minutes.
All 12 active players appeared for the Sooners with nine players scoring against the Braves.
OU travels to Freeport, Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam Nov. 26-28. The Sooners will take on Utah at 3:15 p.m. CT on Thursday and wrap up the event Saturday night against Utah at 7 p.m. CT.
