IRVING, Texas – Oklahoma volleyball senior Taylor Migliazzo and junior Micaela Spann each earned Academic All-Big 12 First Team as announced by the conference office on Wednesday morning. Junior Kimmy Gardiner and sophomore Marion Hazelwood both claimed a spot on the Second Team.
Since head coach Santiago Restrepo took over the reins of the program in 2004, 69 volleyball student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Big 12 First and Second Teams.
First team members consist of student-athletes that have maintained a 3.20 or better grade-point average, while the second team selections hold a GPA ranging from 3.00 to 3.19.
Migliazzo, a defensive specialist from Kansas City, Mo., is a first time honoree. A communications major, she has been a mainstay on the Sooner backrow since her sophomore season. Earlier this season, Migliazzo became the 15th player in program history to record 1,000 career digs. She currently ranks 12th at OU with 1,085.
Spann is a two-time honoree on the first team. A middle blocker and health and exercise science major from Carrollton, Texas, she has started every match of her three-year career. This season, Spann is hitting a team-high .328 with a 2.25 kills and 1.00 blocks per set average. She reached the 300-block mark for her career at Baylor on Sunday and ranks 12th all-time at OU.
Gardiner, a junior outside hitter from Grapevine, Texas, is in her second season with Oklahoma after transferring from Mississippi State. A communications major, she is tied for the team-lead with nine double-doubles this season. Gardiner is averaging 2.51 kills and 2.43 digs per set. A middle blocker and management major from Beach City, Texas, Hazelwood is the reigning AVCA Southwest Rookie of the Year. She is hitting .324 this season, while averaging 2.02 kills and 1.06 blocks per set.
The Sooners finish their season with four home matches in eight days. The action kicks off Saturday, November 21 against TCU at 12:00 pm. Admission to McCasland Field House is free.
