Balanced Offense On Display in Scrimmage

NORMAN – The Oklahoma women's basketball team showed its depth Friday night with five players scoring in double figures as the Sooners completed their annual Crimson/Cream scrimmage at the Lloyd Noble Center.

With its regular season opener just two weeks away, OU played four 10-minute quarters as well as two overtime periods, giving the Sooner faithful their first look at the 2015-16 team. The scrimmage also allowed the Sooners to play with the NCAA's new-game format (four 10-minute quarters) in preparation for the new season.

The Sooners were divided into separate teams during the first and third quarter, while OU came together in the second and fourth quarters to take on members of its male scout team. With OU's exhibition game set for next Wednesday, head coach Sherri Coale was pleased with her squad's performance.

“We did some good things and really spread our scoring around,” Coale said following the scrimmage. “Vivi [Vionise Pierre-Louis] was terrific in the post and Maddie Manning looked really good. We also got really good point guard play from Gabbi [Ortiz] and TT [T'ona Edwards] tonight. It was great to go up and down the floor for an extended period because we really haven't gotten a chance to do that.”

Despite the heavy rain throughout the day in Norman, Coale was also excited about the turnout from Sooner fans for the scrimmage.

“We've got an amazing group of fans. They are the most loyal supporters any team could hope for. It's raining cats and dogs and nasty out, but they braved it tonight to come support us,” Coale said.

Peyton Little put together a strong second half, scoring a team-high 29 points on 10-of-22 shooting with five rebounds. Vionise Pierre-Louis added in a double-double with 27 points (12-for-14) and 11 boards. The sophomore center established her presence early in the paint and continued to dominate the post throughout the night.

“My goal this season is be present for my teammates and to do whatever my coaches need,” Pierre-Louis said afterwards. “They told me to get points so I tried to come out and start the night really well. Our cadence on offense was great and we moved the ball around the lot.”

Maddie Manning was consistent throughout the night, chipping in 15 points on 8-of-15 shooting and eight rebounds. The junior guard was pleased with the team's effort and even more impressed with the large crowd on a rainy night.

“I thought we moved the ball really well tonight,” Manning said. “We feel like we can score from any position which is good. There's a few things we've got to put together and the ball got a little stagnant at times. We'll continue to work on that at practice and make adjustments to make sure that doesn't happen. We were just glad to back on the floor in front of our fans.”

Junior guard Derica Wyatt knocked down four 3-pointers to score 12 points, while sophomore Gabbi Ortiz finished the night with 11 points, six assists and five rebounds. OU's lone senior, forward Kaylon Williams, added in nine points along with seven boards, while junior guard T'ona Edwards dished out six assists and tallied nine points in nearly 40 minutes of action.

The Cream squad won the first and third periods, 28-17, and 22-12, respectively. Pierre-Louis scored 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the opening half for the Crimson squad, while Ortiz led the Cream team with 10 points and four rebounds. Little caught fire in the second half, scoring 20 of her 29 points in the final 20 minutes and two overtime frames.

The Sooners take on Southwestern Oklahoma State in an exhibition game on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. at the Lloyd Noble Center.
