NORMAN, Okla. – Team World came out for nine early runs en route to a 10-6 win over Team Texas in the University of Oklahoma baseball intra-squad Fall World Series. World pushed across two runs in the second and poured in seven in the third. Texas chipped away at the lead, which was as large as nine runs, and got the potential tying run to the plate in the ninth before freshman right-hander Dylan Grove (Oklahoma City, Okla.) shut the door with his second scoreless-inning.

Team World's first two runs came via sacrifice-flies in the second from junior left fielder Reggie Wright (Choctaw, Okla.) and sophomore second baseman Kyle Mendenhall (Carlsbad, Calif.). World set the table by loading the bases with no outs as redshirt-freshman catcher Chandler Wagoner (Temecula, Calif.) led off with a single followed by walks to freshman DH Domenic DeRenzo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman first baseman Ryan Madden (Westminster, Colo.).

World got the bats working quickly again in the third as sophomore center fielder Cameron Frazier (Boulder, Colo.) singled and freshman right fielder Blake Brewster (Moore, Okla.) doubled to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. The big knocks came on a two-run single to right-center from DeRenzo and a double over the third base bag by Wright to drive in two more.

Redshirt-junior lefty Hayden Jones (Houston, Texas) was the second reliever out of the bullpen for Team Texas. He was able to right the ship with four-consecutive zeroes thrown up on the scoreboard. In that span, Texas rallied for six runs with at least one scored from the fourth through seventh innings.

A lead-off single in the top of the fourth by junior shortstop Sheldon Neuse (Fort Worth, Texas) led to Texas' first run of the game. Junior center fielder Ben Hollas (Longview, Texas) singled with one away in the fifth and scored on a single through the right side by freshman right fielder Steele Walker (Prosper, Texas). The sixth started off with each of the first four batters reaching base. With the bases loaded, freshman third baseman Cade Harris (Leona, Texas) drew his second of three walks on the day to drive in a run. Hollas and senior left fielder Hunter Haley (Nacogdoches, Texas) each followed with a sacrifice-fly to cut the Team World lead to 9-5.

Walker led off the seventh with a single and scored on a fielder's choice hit into by freshman second baseman Thomas Hughes (Norman, Okla.). Texas loaded the bases with two down to bring the tying run to the plate, but freshman right-hander Austin Hansen (Lenexa, Kan.) was able to complete his second inning of relief with a harmless fly ball to left field and strand all three runners.

Team World added an insurance run in the eighth on a RBI-single from DeRenzo. Freshman right-hander Dylan Grove (Oklahoma City, Okla.), who entered in a three-run game to start the top of the eighth, stayed on to finish his second scoreless-inning and earn the save.

Senior lefty Shawn Hunter (Fort Supply, Okla.) earned the win for World in 0.2 innings of relief with three runs allowed on three hits and two walks. Senior righty Keaton Hernandez (Palm Springs, Calif.) took the loss in a 2.1-inning start for Texas. He surrendered six runs on five hits and three walks with two strikeouts. For World, junior left-hander Austin Kerns (Owasso, Okla.) pitched 4.1-strong innings in the start. He allowed just one run on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts.

Game two is scheduled for a 3:00 pm first pitch on Tuesday, October 13 at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Admission is free.
