NORMAN - The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team is the lone No. 1 squad again.
OU locked up the nation's No. 1 overall ranking this week with a season average of 197.325. The Sooners took back solo position of the top spot in the rankings after posting a 197.850 last weekend, the top team score in the nation this season.
The newest rankings set up an exciting weekend for the Sooners, who are slated to take on No. 2 LSU in the annual Metroplex Challenge on Saturday night in Fort Worth. The quad meet will also feature No. 8 Arkansas and Iowa State.
The Sooners will open the week against No. 20 Denver on Thursday night in Colorado.
Oklahoma is ranked in the top four nationally on every apparatus, including a No. 1 national ranking on uneven bars with a season average of 49.442. OU is also ranked second in the country on vault (49.450) and floor exercise (49.308) and fourth on balance beam (49.125).
OU's strong team efforts are bolstered by stellar individual rankings across the board: at least one Sooner gymnast ins ranked in the top five nationally on vault, bars and beam.
Sophomore Chayse Capps leads the way for Oklahoma this week, tying for first in the country on balance beam with a season average of 9.917 in three performances. Capps is one of only four gymnasts in the country to post a 9.95 or better in a performance this year. The Plano, Texas native is also ranked 20th nationally on vault (9.887).
Junior Haley Scaman continues to shine for Oklahoma on vault, capturing the No. 3 individual ranking this week with an average of 9.95 after her fourth career perfect 10.0 last weekend. Scaman is also ranked eighth in the country on floor (9.908).
A pair of underclass standouts are supporting OU's No. 1 overall ranking on uneven bars. True freshman Brenna Dowell became the first gymnast this season to post a perfect 10.0 on uneven bars last weekend and enters this week ranked No. 4 nationally (9.933). Sophomore McKenzie Wofford is close behind, earning a 9.917 average to tie for fifth in the country.
Joining Dowell and Wofford in the top 25 on bars this week are senior Erica Brewer (No. 12, 9.875) and junior Keeley Kmieciak (No. 15, 9.867). Oklahoma owns four individual national rankings on both vault and uneven bars.
In addition to Capps and Scaman, the Sooner vault lineup is supported in the top 25 by freshman Ali Jackson (No. 13, 9.9) and Maile'ana Kanewa (No. 22, 9.883).
Brewer broke back into the beam rankings this week to join Capps, earning a tie for the No. 23 spot with a 9.842 average. Sophomore Kara Lovan continues to rise in the floor exercise rankings as well, snapping up the No. 14 position with a 9.892 season average. Lovan captured a career-high 9.925 in OU's win last weekend.
