NORMAN - Eight straight victories, including starting Big 12 Conference play a perfect 7-0, has propelled the Oklahoma women's basketball team into the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time this season. The Sooners checked in at No. 24 Monday after receiving 73 votes.
The Sooners started the season 6-5 but have since rattled off eight straight wins after returning from the holiday break. The eight victories include an upset of then-No. 4/5 Texas and then-No. 20 Oklahoma State. This past week, Oklahoma defeated the Cowgirls 73-54 and earned a gritty 70-64 victory over Texas Tech.
The eight game win streak is the longest since the Sooners won 20 in a row during the 2008-09 season.
Oklahoma is one of three Big 12 teams that appear in the top 25. Fellow league members Baylor (No. 3) and Texas (No. 14) are also ranked. Iowa State is one of the other school receiving votes.
The Sooners, 13-5 overall, have a tough week ahead. They play at 14-ranked Texas Thursday, Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. and close out the week with a contest at West Virginia Sunday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m.
