Sooners Win Two in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Oklahoma women's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season by defeating UC Santa Barbara (5-2) and Southern Illinois (6-0) in Fayetteville, Ark., today. Only singles matches were played against Southern Illinois.
Oklahoma's freshmen continued to shine as two improved their singles record to 3-0 on the season, one improved to 2-0, and another earned a win in her first collegiate match.
“Today was our first test away from home for our freshmen, and again I was really impressed with how they responded,” said OU head coach David Mullins.
Playing No. 1 singles, freshman Lily Miyazaki cruised in both of her matches. She defeated Lou Adler of UCSB 6-4, 6-3, before defeating Natasha Tomishima of Southern Illinois 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Malene Stripp took her first collegiate match over Ariadna Cairo Baza of Southern Illinois 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 4 singles position.
After a huge comeback in her singles match against North Texas, freshman Christiana Brigante also improved to 3-0 in singles with wins over Stacy Yam (6-1, 6-3) of UCSB at No. 6 singles and Vitoria Beirao (6-0, 6-4) of SIU at the No. 5 singles position.
The Sooners were able to come away victorious in all three of the tiebreakers they participated in Saturday, all of which came in the third set.
“We are playing with a lot of belief in the big moments and regrouping quickly when we have either lost some momentum or have not played a good point,” said Mullins. “I think these two matches have helped us prepare for what should be a very close match tomorrow.”
The Sooners are back in action tomorrow against the No. 58 Arkansas Razorbacks at 2 p.m. in Fayetteville.
