NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 24 University of Oklahoma women's tennis team opened the 2015 season Tuesday winning its ninth straight season opener. The Sooners defeated the North Texas Mean Green 7-0 in the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
The Sooners also beat North Texas in their season opener last season by a score of 7-0.
I was just really impressed with how we won the big points with a lot of calm and a lot of belief,” said OU head coach David Mullins. “We won a ton of deuce points that usually can go either way but I felt like we were on the right side of it.”
In doubles play, sophomore Morgan Chumney and junior Emma Devine got the Sooners off to a good start. They controlled the match en route to a 6-2 victory.
“They are very capable of putting out a lot of performances like that and when they are making first serves and they're making some big returns nobody can really hang with them,” said Mullins. “It's too much power and it's overwhelming.”
Senior Abbi Melrose and junior Zita Engbroks secured the doubles point by winning the tiebreaker 7-2, ultimately grabbing a 7-6 win.
In singles play, Chumney never trailed and clinched for the Sooners in a 6-4, 7-5 win.
All three freshmen won their respective matches for the Sooners. Christiana Brigante came back from a 5-3 first set deficit to win 7-6, 6-0 over Franziska Sprinkmeyer, while Simran Sethi controlled her match in a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Anastasiya Shestakova. Lily Miyazaki also fought back from a deficit, losing the first set and eventually winning 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 over Kseniya Bardabush.
Melrose dominated her match, getting out to a 4-1 lead in both sets to win 6-2, 6-1 against Alexis Thoma.
Junior Zita Engbroks battled through three sets and defeated Agustina Valenzuela 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
“I'm probably most pleased with when we got into tough situations, how we handled it,” said Mullins. “I'm thrilled. They showed me a lot today and if this is our starting point it's a really good starting point because we're a little further along than I expected to be.”
The Sooners head to Fayetteville, Ark., on Jan. 24-25, where they will match up against UC Santa Barbara, Southern Illinois, and Arkansas.
