Head Coach Patty Gasso
On clinching a share of the Big 12 title:
“I'm very proud of the consistency that's been going on throughout my time here. I will talk about it, but I really don't want to until we outright do it. There are no celebrations going on because this team doesn't want to share anything. When they get that next one is when you'll feel it a little bit more. I'm very proud of the efforts and the hard work that's gone into making this program one of the bests.”
On starting Shelby Pendley:
“I'll start her anywhere she wants to go because she is that kind of athlete. Watching her out there today, this is the most consecutive innings she's thrown. To really see her pitches move and see her keeping Texas Tech hitters guessing, she was really, really good today. I'm very proud of her and we're going to call on her in postseason.”
On Kady Self's injury:
“She has torn her ACL. What we are going to work hard on is getting that leg as strong as possible. There's no meniscus tear so that possibly can allow her to get that brace on if the leg is strong enough to stabilize. She might have an opportunity to finish with us. We're heartbroken and Kady will work diligently to make this happen. This is a young lady that has worked her tail off to get an opportunity and she ran with it. She's still probably up there for Big 12 Player of the Year. She's hitting .553 in conference play. It was a hard one to take, but we'll keep going.”
On the top two pitchers being transfers:
“I'm just glad they're here. We recruited both of them out of high school and they finally got the decision right. I sat on my bucket over there and I'm just looking at Shelby thinking it wasn't but a couple months ago that she came forward and said 'you know I can pitch,' and we just kind of laughed at her but again, when you hear someone like that tell you something, you take it seriously. To see her on the mound throwing a two-hitter against one of the most potent offenses in the Big 12, I'm just amazed. Unbelievable credit to her for stepping up and saying let me try this. I don't look at them as transfers, I look at them as Sooners.”
Sophomore Whitney Ellis
On Shelby Pendley's pitching:
“I saw excellence. Shelby is a competitor at whatever position you put her in. On the mound she likes to get her ground balls and her strikeouts and she does a great job of getting what she wants.”
On her grand slam:
“I needed to make an adjustment, and I was looking to go opposite field. I kept telling myself to keep fouling it off until she threw me something outside that I could go with or a changeup I could sit on and I finally got my pitch after like 13 pitches so I got my job done.”
Junior Shelby Pendley
On how she felt starting today:
“I wasn't nervous at all. I just looked at it the same as coming into the end of the game except at the beginning.”
