Nine Earn Academic All-Big 12

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Big 12 Conference announced that nine members of the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team on Tuesday, the most in program history.

Dylan Akers, Danny Berardini, Presten Ellsworth, Ethan Jose, Stanton Rehkemper, Michael Reid, Sergey Resnick, Alec Robin and Michael Squires all earned First Team honors. The nine total awardees are the most ever in a season for the program, passing the previous record of six set last season.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Akers (English), Berardini (management), Ellsworth (planned programs), Jose (biology), Rehkemper (health and exercise science) and Robin (zoology) are each two-time honorees while Reid (planned programs), Resnick (health and exercise science) and Squires (accounting) claim honors for the first time.

The Sooners, ranked No. 1 every week of the regular season, are set to compete at the NCAA Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., starting Thursday looking for the program's ninth national title.

The 2014 Academic All-Big 12 At-Large Team recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at Conference institutions that participate in sports outside of Big 12 competition. The sports included for the 2013-14 season are acrobatics & tumbling, men's gymnastics, men's soccer and rifle.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, the academic at-large squad consisted of 25 first team members combined with six individuals on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
