Head Coach Patty Gasso
On the past two wins:
“I would say the last two days were kind of a tired performance. Both days we weren't at our best; we weren't very sharp. You could see things dragging a little bit, and it's almost expected after how much energy we poured into the weekend to get through Texas. It was an emotional rollercoaster that we were on. It wasn't pretty, but it got the job done. What this team needs is a little bit of time to get their bodies back and their minds back and get hungry again. This is a big weekend for us. Alabama-Birmingham is a very good team who has a strong RPI so games against them will help us. But we have to go in better than what we showed these last two games and I know that we will once we get a little bit of time to breathe. The timing of these two games was tough on this team, but they handled it pretty well. But we definitely are much better than what we showed these past two games.”
On the slow start on offense:
“We were not very disciplined. We were not letting the ball get deep, we were just early on everything. We had some rollover ground balls early and popping things up and that's not characteristic of us. We're a much smarter hitting team. We just were not being very disciplined. Part of that is just the mind not being right and the body not being right. The good news is that we have a pitcher that probably would tell you that she was not the best she's ever been either, but a one-hit shutout is a pretty nice result when a team is not really pounding the ball the way that they need to. So, when not all parts of your game are working, when you can get one strong piece, like we did on the mound, and the defense doing their job, it buys time for the offense to figure things out. That's really kind of the story of today.”
On Lauren Chamberlain's return:
“We are optimistic, I'll say, for Saturday. She's getting the green light to start joining practice slowly so we'll see if she's even physically ready for Saturday. But it would just be in a hitting position. We're getting close, very close.”
Sophomore Pitcher Kelsey Stevens
On if she was thinking about the no-hitter in the seventh inning:
“Not really, I was just trying to go out and do what I was going the innings before and just get out of the game.”
On her run after the Louisiana-Lafayette series:
“I think I started being more efficient with my pitches and getting head of the batter more. Just stepping up for my team.”
