Head coach Patty Gasso
On what she said to her team before the game:
“First of all, Texas just kicked our rear end [Friday]. Bottom line. We understand that. We're not taking anything from what they did. We did not play well, but even beyond that, they were excellent. To get run ruled the way we did, we were all embarrassed and felt like we let people down. We let down our program, so we talked a little about character, about pride, about confidence and being steadfast with our confidence from the beginning to the end to get to the finish line. That's what it was about. I called individuals out in groups and challenged them. All three of these guys (Kelsey Stevens, Destinee Martinez and Paris Townsend) being them, and we had a great response from everybody that was put out in front of everyone else. Any time you have a team that can respond in a way like that, especially after something like last night, this was may be one of the biggest wins I've been a part of in a long time. To see them come back and answer the way they did, in our opinion, we're controlling our destiny, and that's important to us not counting on others to get the job done for us. We'd rather have it that way.”
Senior Outfielder Destinee Martinez:
On what was on their mind before the game:
“Just what happened to us yesterday was a huge thing when we were doing BP [batting practice] and stuff before the game. We had that in mind. We're always ready to come out and attack, and I think the results of yesterday was what really triggered it today.”
On how they approached the offense differently:
“We had a little discussion and a different plan and approach in the box today. The coaches watched some film and explained to us what differences we could make and ways to change up our plan.”
On what the mindset is moving forward:
“I think we just need to remember how much fun we had playing today. We just need to remember it's about the fun you can have when you're playing against somebody. Don't put so much pressure on yourself to get something certain done.”
On how they felt after Coach talked to them yesterday:
“I think we all took it that it's not just one person that needs to step up; we all need to step up and make changes. When she called out the groups, it's true. We have been experienced and what happened yesterday should not happen again. We all can do it. It was just a reality check.”
Sophomore Pitcher Kelsey Stevens:
On what changed from yesterday to today:
“I really just came out ready from the start. I think all of us let down a little yesterday and it set the tone for the game and it went downhill from there. I just wanted to come out and show that I wasn't going to give up and we were going to take it to them this time.”
Sophomore Outfielder Paris Townsend:
On her home run:
“Before the game we had a different plan and I just executed it. Just trying to keep it simple.”
On her curtain call:
“It felt really good. I love how the crowd is just so into the game. It feels really good.”
