Sooners Finish Ninth at Elite Tournament

NORMAN, Okla. -- After shooting a third-round 297 (+9) on Sunday, the 14th-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team finished ninth at the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. The 15-team, 54-hole event was played at the 7,510-yard, par-72 Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nev.
For the tournament, the Sooners totaled a 40-over-par 904. They started strong, posting a 296 (+8) for the first 18 holes before recording a 23-over 311 on Saturday. The prestigious tournament featured the top five teams in the nation in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, and all 15 teams are ranked in the Golfweek top 50.
No. 37 UNLV, who hosted the tournament, took the team title with a three-round 886 (+22). No. 10 Stanford and No. 3 Oklahoma State tied for second with scores of 888 (+24), while top-ranked Alabama and No. 19 UCLA shared fourth place with 33-over 897s.
Leading the Sooners was Michael Schoolcraft, who finished in a career-best tie for second place out of 81 individuals, his second top-three showing in the last three tournaments. The senior improved his score each round and fired an even-par 72 for the final 18 holes en route to a 219 (+3) total, two strokes off winner Patrick Rodgers from Stanford. On Sunday, Schoolcraft pocketed two birdies and parred 14 holes.
Junior Charlie Saxon and sophomore Beau Titsworth both carded 2-over 74s in the final round. Saxon finished in a tie for 26th place 10-over-par 226, while Titsworth took a share of 50th place with a 231 (+15). Titsworth eagled the par-4 hole No. 5, his second eagle of the tournament.
With a three-round 232 (+16), junior Michael Gellerman placed in a tie for 53rd after shooting a 78 (+6) on Sunday. Freshman Max McGreevy tallied a 5-over 77 to bring his 54-hole total to 235 (+19), good for a tie for 62nd place.The Sooners return to the course on Friday, March 14, at the two-day, 54-hole Border Olympics in Laredo, Texas.
