IRVING, Texas -- The No. 3 Oklahoma women's gymnastics team placed nine team members on the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics team. The distinction gives OU its highest number of academic all-conference selections under head coach K.J. Kindler.
Oklahoma's nine honorees on the listing are all first-team selections. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. The Sooners tied Iowa State for the most overall selections (nine); West Virginia earned seven spots on the listing.
Seniors Lara Albright, Lauren Alexander, Madison Mooring, Taylor Spears and Hayden Ward led the way on the award listing, giving the entire senior class academic honors. The senior class was joined by junior Rebecca Clark and sophomores Maile'ana Kanewa, Keeley Kmieciak and Haley Scaman.
With the award, Mooring became a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree. Albright, Alexander, Ward, Spears and Clark all picked up the second awards of their careers.
This season marks the eighth in a row that at least four OU gymnasts have earned academic all-conference honors. Under Kindler's leadership, Oklahoma has earned 55 Academic All-Big 12 awards.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
OU wrapped up regular season competition with a record of 15-2 overall, including ten wins over ranked foes. The Sooners will travel to the 2014 Big 12 Championships in Morgantown, W.Va., this weekend in pursuit of the program's 12th conference title. The championship meet is set for a 3 p.m. CT start on Saturday, March 22.
