Sooners Move to No. 2 Ahead of Big Weekend

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma women's gymnastics team moved to No. 2 nationally in this week's top 25 rankings, marking the fourth week of competition that the Sooners have been ranked in the top two. OU spent three consecutive weeks at No. 1 to open 2014 before being edged out for the top spot this week.

Florida led all teams nationally this week with a team average of 197.413. Oklahoma followed in the No. 2 spot (197.294) ahead of No. 3 LSU (197.225), No. 4 Utah (196.963) and No. 5 Georgia (196.871). The Sooners are set to face third-ranked LSU this weekend in Norman.

OU is ranked in the top five nationally on every event, including top three rankings on vault, bars and beam. The Sooners' beam squad continues to lead all events, owning a No. 2 national ranking and an average of 49.281 through four meets. OU's best beam score this season of 49.525 remains one of the nation's top two this season. The squad is third nationally on both vault (49.438) and bars (49.288) and edged up to fifth this week on floor (49.500).

Seven individual Sooners own 10 appearances in the top 25 individual rankings, with Erica Brewer, Maile'ana Kanewa and McKenzie Wofford each earning spots in multiple events. Brewer continues to appear in the top 10 nationally in the all-around, coming in at No. 7 (39.438). The junior is also 12th on uneven bars (9.875).

Joining Brewer in the uneven bars rankings is freshman Wofford, who cracked the top 25 in a tie for 21st this week (9.863). Wofford is also tied for No. 1 nationally on beam after posting a 9.925 in her first collegiate appearance on the event on Jan. 25. 

Kanewa continued her success on vault, earning a tie for No. 20 this week with an average of 9.881. After appearing in the floor lineup for the first time last week, Kanewa is also tied for 20th on the event (9.875).

Sophomore Haley Scaman held fast to the No. 5 spot nationally on vault this week with an average of 9.919. Scaman has scored no lower than a 9.9 on four vaults this season. She is joined in the event's rankings by classmate Keeley Kmieciak, who is tied for 11th nationally (9.906).

In addition to Wofford's ranking, OU owns two additional top 10 spots courtesy of senior Taylor Spears and junior Rebecca Clark. Spears is fifth nationally (9.894), with three beam performances of 9.9 or higher this year. Clark is tied for eighth in the nation, boasting an average of 9.875.

The Sooners are set to face third-ranked LSU in Norman this weekend, marking one of the squad's biggest home meets of the season. The two teams will square off in the Lloyd Noble Center on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 1:45 p.m.
