Sooner Student-Athletes Set to Graduate

NORMAN – After several years of classes, practices and competitions, a special group of University of Oklahoma student-athletes have reached a very special goal as 33 current and former Sooners will graduate from OU during December convocation ceremonies this weekend.

The first to graduate will be those earning degrees in the College of Arts and Sciences and those in the College of Atmospheric and Geo Sciences. Ceremonies for those two colleges will be tonight at 6:30 p.m. (Arts and Sciences-Lloyd Noble Center) and 7 p.m. (Atmospheric and Geo Sciences – Weather Center).

Other student-athlete graduates will earn degrees from  the Mewbourne College of Earth and Energy – Saturday, 10 a.m., Oklahoma Memorial Union, Meacham Auditorium; the Jeannine Rainbolt College of Education – Saturday, 10 a.m., McCasland OU Field House; the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication – Saturday, 10 a.m., Paul F. Sharp Concert Hall, Catlette Music Center; and the Price College of Business – Saturday, Dec. 13, 2 p.m., McCasland OU Field House.

Ceremonies for Arts and Sciences and Education will be streamed live through SoonerSports.com and the College of Education.

The Sooners will celebrate 30 undergraduate degree recipients and three master's degree candidates.  Football has nine undergraduates earning degrees and one former player, Marcus Walker, who has completed a master's degree. Walker lettered 2004-07, left for the NFL and returned to earn his bachelor's degree in 2012. He will add a master's of human relations during the Arts and Sciences ceremony. Junior Ty Darlington will be one of the student speakers at the Arts and Sciences ceremony in addition to graduating with a BS in Arts and Sciences-Planned Program.

Baseball has six current or former players picking up their degrees tonight and men's track and field has four. Rowing leads the way for the women with four undergraduates and two master's degree recipients. Those candidates, Nicole Furmanek and Rebecca Staff, were key members of the teams that started the Sooner program and produced the first conference titles and NCAA trip in 2013.
