NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 25 University of Oklahoma volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep of West Virginia in front of 989 at McCasland Field House on Saturday night. The Sooners improved to 16-6 overall, 7-2 in the Big 12 and 9-0 at home. The Mountaineers dropped to 13-11 and 3-7.
“We have a thousand people a lot so that's actually pretty special and the crowd is very rowdy and gets us going,” said head coach Santiago Restrepo of his team's home court advantage. “We're extremely happy to have them.”
For Oklahoma, it was the eighth sweep of the season and second in a row. The Sooners took the match by scores of 26-24, 25-17 and 25-17.
Redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Madison Ward (Lawton, Okla.) was dominant on the attack with a career-high 21 kills and hit .679 with just two errors on 28 assists. She added six digs and two blocks. In the first set, Ward tallied 11 kills and hit .846.
“Twenty-one kills and .679 hitting percentage is pretty special,” reflected Restrepo. “That's pretty darn good. She's capable of putting those numbers so we just keep working with her about making the least amount of mistakes as much as possible and she only made two errors so that's pretty good.”
Junior outside hitter Kierra Holst (Coppell, Texas) finished second with 14 kills and hit an impressive .407 to go with three digs and three service aces.
“I think we have a lot of options,” stated Restrepo. “[Ward and Holst] just happened to be it tonight, which I told Julia [Doyle] they are not able to stop our outside hitters so that means there's no point to set anyone else until they do, so we continue feeding the outside hitters.”
West Virginia pushed Oklahoma in the first set and initially held an early 9-5 lead to force the first OU timeout of the match. Out of the timeout, the Sooners went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by five kills from Ward.
For the match, Oklahoma hit .438 to the Mountaineers .244. The Sooners hit a collective .538 in the third set and have hit .350 or better in all six sets won against West Virginia as they swept the season series.
Junior setter Julia Doyle (Plymouth, Minn.) registered 42 assists for Oklahoma in the win along with seven digs. Junior libero Taylor Migliazzo (Kansas City, Mo.) recorded a team-high nine digs.
Sophomore middle blocker Micaela Spann (Carrollton, Texas) added seven kills on a .429 hitting percentage.
Hannah Sackett led the Mountaineers with 10 kills and hit .474, while Jordan Anderson was held to eight kills and a .111 hitting percentage.
Lamprini Konstantinidou dished out 28 assists and Nikki Attea tied with Anderson for the team-lead in digs at eight, while adding nine kills.
The Sooners return to action on Wednesday, November 5 at TCU at 6:30 pm.
