Dalton, Bower Stand Out After Opening Round

Team USA in Third After Prelims

NANNING, China – Led by OU head coach Mark Williams, the U.S. Men's Gymnastics Team is in third place through the preliminary rounds with a score of 360.393 at the 2014 World Championships. China qualified in first (362.698) followed by Japan in second (361.609).

“I'm really proud of how Team USA competed tonight,” said Williams. “The guys were very strong right from the start with outstanding pommel horse and rings, finishing third in prelims behind China and Japan puts us in the hunt going into the team finals on Tuesday.”

Former OU standout and captain of the team, Jake Dalton, had a strong showing, as he qualified for the floor exercise and vault event finals, marking the first time in his illustrious career that he has qualified for multiple event finals at the World Championships.

“I'm also thrilled to have Jake in two event finals for the first time at a World Championships. All in all, a good night for Team USA.”

Dalton posted the team's best score on vault with a 15.183, the sixth best score of the competition through prelims. The Oklahoma alum's score of 15.466 on floor exercise was the eighth highest score in the preliminary round. Dalton claimed silver in the event at the 2013 World Championships.

Team USA will compete for a spot on the podium on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in China, 6 a.m. CT.
