BRISTOL, Conn. – University of Oklahoma volleyball junior Kierra Holst was named the espnW Volleyball Player of the Week as announced by the media outlet on Wednesday afternoon. The award comes on the heels of Holst being named the Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, her second such honor this season.
The last national weekly honor for a Sooner came on September 17, 2013 when Sallie McLaurin was named the AVCA National Player of the Week. Caitlin Higgins was the first Sooner to win such award as the AVCA National Player of the Week on November 4, 2008, which also occurred following an upset win at Texas.
An outside hitter from Coppell, Texas, Holst tallied a match-high 16 kills in Oklahoma's road upset of No. 2 Texas on Saturday night. For the week, she hit a team-best .311 and averaged 4.50 kills per set as the Sooners faced a pair of Top-25 opponents away from home. The win over the Longhorns was the first for Oklahoma in Austin since 2008.
Holst hit a season-high .588 with 11 kills and one error on 17 attempts at No. 22 Kansas State on Wednesday.
She shared the honor this week with K-State middle blocker Natali Jones. Holst previously claimed the award on September 29 after a 23-kill night against No. 23 Kansas in the Sooners' Big 12 opener.
On the season, Holst is averaging a team-high 3.34 kills per set, including 3.87 in eight conference matches. She is hitting .245 with 1.05 digs and a league-leading 0.52 service aces per set.
For the second straight season, Holst was recognized as a Preseason All-Big 12 selection. Following her rookie season in 2012, she was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
Oklahoma returns to action at home on Saturday night against West Virginia at 7:00 pm.
