NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma men's tennis doubles team of Axel Alvarez and
Dane Webb advanced to the semifinals of the main draw doubles on day two of the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships at the Headington Family Tennis Center Friday.
Alvarez and Webb, the No. 3 seeded pair in main draw doubles, won three matches on a rain soaked Friday that pushed all play into the Gregg Wadley Indoor Pavilion.
“Axel and Dane played some great doubles today,” associate head coach Bo Hodge said. “When they are aggressive and serve big, they are able to suffocate the teams they play. “
The Sooner duo drew a bye in the first round of the 64-pair doubles draw and then dominated their next three matches. They overpowered Alex Koca and Quinn Dippel of Creighton 8-2 in a match that took less than an hour. They then toppled Matic Spec and Eric Frueh of Minnesota, 8-3. In their quarterfinal match, Alvarez and Webb dispatched Alejandro Espejo and Or Ram-Harel of turnpike-rival Tulsa, 8-5.
Alvarez, a junior, and Webb, a senior, will be back in action as a pair on Sunday when they face second seeded Hamburg/Froment of Minnesota in the semifinals.
Fellow Sooners
Alex Ghilea and
Nick Papac were also in action on Friday. The fifth seeded pair also received a first round bye, but fell in the second round to Linus Erhart and Scott Elsass of Nebraska 8-7 in tightly contested match that went to a tiebreaker.
“Nick and Alex lost a close match,” Hodge said. “They had some chances but just didn't do enough on the big points.”
Play resumes at the Central Regional Championship Saturday morning with the start of main draw singles. All four Sooners in the 64-man main draw are top-15 seeds.
Alvarez, the No. 1 seed, will lead off for the Sooners. He is slated to face Quinn Dippel of Creighton at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Ghilea, the No. 11 seed, will also play at 9 a.m., facing Tucker Saxson of Minnesota. Saxon earned his spot in the main draw with two wins in the qualifying draw on Thursday. Papac, the No. 15 seed, also plays at 9 a.m. The redshirt senior is scheduled to face Ben Mullis of Drake. Webb, the No. 2 seed, will face Will Albanese of Arkansas at noon.
“I'm looking forward to watching the guys in singles tomorrow,” Hodge said. “I know they are excited to play on their home courts.”
