Sooners Win ITA Kick Off Championship

NORMAN, Okla. – No. 9 Oklahoma beat No.31 Northwestern 4-0 in the ITA Kick Off championship match Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

OU secured the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No.1 positions.

Axel Alvarez and Guillermo Alcorta recorded the first doubles win, ousting Alp Horoz and Fedor Baev 6-2.

Dane Webb and Andrew Harris sealed the Sooners doubles point, topping Mihir Kumar and Sam Shropshire 6-4.

OU collected three points in singles play, clinching the Sooner victory.

In the No. 2 position Alvarez earned the first point, beating Shropshire in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.

Alcorta claimed the next point for OU, defeating Raleigh Smith 6-3, 6-2.

Sophomore Austin Siegel secured the Sooner win. After being down 2-6 in the first set, he fought back and prevailed over Baev 2-6, 6-5, 6-1.

Head coach John Roddick was pleased with Siegel's performance.

“It looked like he fought really hard and did a great job at coming back,” Roddick said. “He actually got a point there at the end that for most of the match I wasn't expecting him to get. In the end he may of saved us and helped us quite a bit.”

“I'm proud of that effort and that's something we've wanted to see from him. Having the heart to be able to come back and pull those out and put our team at a very good position at the end is a great thing to see from our five spot.”

Up next, Roddick's squad hosts Indiana Sunday, Feb.2, at 9:30 a.m.
