Indianapolis -- The University of Oklahoma rowing team's record-setting season continued on Thursday as sophomore Kim Moldenhauer received the NCAA Elite 89 Award at the 2013 NCAA Rowing Championship Banquet.

An international business major from Bremen, Germany, Moldenhauer is the first OU student-athlete across all sports to earn the award. She carries a 4.0 grade point average and will race in Oklahoma's top boat at this weekend's NCAA Championship.

“It's an incredible honor to be recognized by the NCAA, considering the outstanding women I am surrounded by daily and at the championships this weekend,” Moldenhauer said. “Being able to represent the University of Oklahoma makes me very proud. I could not do what I'm doing without the incredible support system we are surrounded by at OU.”

The Elite 89 Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 89 championships. The award recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

"It's great to see Kim recognized by the NCAA for her outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments,” OU head coach Leeanne Crain said. “Achieving and maintaining a perfect 4.0 is indeed an impressive feat and I know she is honored to be the recipient of this prestigious award."

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be a member of the squad that traveled to the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.

Moldenhauer and the Sooners compete at their first NCAA Championship Friday-Sunday at Indianapolis' Eagle Creek Park. OU is seeded 17th in the varsity eight and varsity four and 14th in the second varsity eight event.
