Rowing Earns Trifecta of Regional Honors

NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Oklahoma head rowing coach Leeanne Crain, graduate assistant coach Kelsey Witten and senior Nikki Furmanek were honored with South Regional accolades by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Thursday.
Crain was named the Regional Coach of the Year, Witten was named the Regional Assistant Coach of the Year and Furmanek was named to the All-Region First Team, the CRCA announced today.
Eleven OU rowers also earned the Scholar Athlete Award given by the CRCA.
The Sooners, coming off their first Big 12 and Conference USA titles, will make their first NCAA Championship appearance May 31-June 2. In their fifth season, the regional Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year honors are the first in program history.
For the first time in her career, Crain
was named South Regional Coach of the Year. The Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013 and the Conference USA Coach of the Year this season has guided the Sooners to their first conference title and a berth in this weekend's NCAA Championship.
Witten, the South Region Assistant Coach of the Year, earned her first career coaching accolade. A coxswain for the Sooners from 2009-'11, she is in her second season as a graduate assistant coach and has led OU's second varsity eight to a No. 14 seed at the NCAA Championship.
Furmanek, the Big 12 and Conference USA Rower of the Year, was named to the South All-Region Team for the third-straight year. She was a second team honoree in 2012 and earned first team honors in 2011.Furmanek has rowed in OU's varsity eight all four years and helped lead the Sooners' top boat to a No. 17 seed at the NCAA Championship.
Ivy Brown, Rachel Cantrell, Kristin Clift, Laura Combs, Brooke Holleman, Marilyn Kozlowski, Kim Moldenhauer, Jennifer O'Grady, Kelsey O'Grady, Emmie Preskitt and Furmanek were named Scholar Athletes. The award is given to student-athletes in at least their second season with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher. Eligible rowers must also have competed in a minimum of 75% of OU's races this season.
