Ricketts and Shults became the first ever athletes from the Oklahoma program to win gold at the World Cup of Softball as Ricketts earned the save for the U.S. by recording the game's final two outs. Ricketts entered the circle Monday night in the top of the seventh with two outs and Japanese runners on first and second. Ricketts struck out her first batter faced, Kasumi Mizoe, before two Japanese runs scored on a dropped fly ball to left. With Eri Yamada advancing to third and the tying run at the plate, Ricketts forced Misa Okubo to pop up and the Sooner pitcher calmly grabbed the final out to give the U.S. the win. Ricketts saw action in four of the six games in the World Cup for the U.S., recording wins against Australia and Japan during preliminary action along with Monday's save. Ricketts pitched in three of the four games, spending six innings in the circle and giving up just three hits and one earned run. At the plate, Ricketts had one at bat against Canada as pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh of Saturday's game, recording a single that drove in USA's third run of the game. Shults played in two of the six American games, starting behind the plate in Saturday's 4-3 loss to Canada. Next up for the USA Softball Women's National Team is the Pan American Games, Oct. 17-23, in Guadalajara, Mexico. |
