OU Softball History & Tradition
With team accomplishments comes individual recognition. That adage has held true with the Oklahoma softball program, which has raked in just about every honor out there.
Start with the coaching staff. OU head coach Patty Gasso, the architect of the Sooners' move to the top of the softball world, has been named conference coach of the year 16 times (15 times as Big 12 Coach of the Year and once as SEC Coach of the Year), including a current run of 13Ā straight - 1996, 1999, 2000, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Gasso and her staff were named NFCA Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year in 2000, 2013, 2016, 2017,Ā 2022 and 2023 after claimingĀ Ā national championships in each of those seasons.
Gasso and staff have claimed the regional honor in 17Ā of their 31Ā seasons with the most recent award coming in 2025.
Since the start of Big 12 play, OU players have accumulated more honors than any other conference member.
The list starts with All-Americans, of which OU has 85Ā honors in addition toĀ 177Ā All-Region honors and 135Ā first-team all-conference selections. In the Big 12 era, Sooners have been named Big 12 Player of the Year a total of 17Ā times and Big 12 Pitcher of the Year 10 times, while 10Ā have been selected as Big 12 Freshman of the Year and one as Big 12 Newcomer.
In 2010, Amber Flores became the first player in league history to earn Player of the Year honors twice, while Shelby Pendley joined her in 2015 and Jocelyn Alo in 2022. In 2023, Grace Lyons became the first conference player to earn three Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors. Alo became just the fifth NCAA DI player to win back-to-back USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year awards in 2022.
The OU softball success under Gasso has also spilled over into the classroom where the Sooners have been honored with 162Ā academic all-conference honors. 22Ā of those have gone on to become Academic All-Americans, including Lana Moran, the 2000 Academic All-American of the Year.
