NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma's Hector Lorenzana was named the Big 12 Baseball Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced today.
Lorenzana accounted for eight of the 11 runs Oklahoma scored in its Bedlam Series matchup with Oklahoma State last weekend. The second baseman recorded five hits in 11 at-bats (.455) with three runs scored and six runs batted in.
Friday, Lorenzana plated all three Sooner runs in one swing with a game-tying homer in the fourth inning. Saturday, he was 3-for-4 with two RBIs as he cut a 3-0 OSU lead to one run in the sixth inning. Sunday, while trailing 4-1 in the fourth, the junior college transfer smacked an RBI double and scored one at-bat later to ignite OU's rally.
Lorenzana is the ninth Sooner, and second newcomer, to earn a Big 12 weekly award.
Oklahoma hosts Dallas Baptist Tuesday, May 14, at 6:30 p.m. Central. The Sooner Sports TV-produced broadcast will air on FS Oklahoma and FCS Central.
The Sooners finish the regular season with a three-game series at Kansas State. First pitch Friday is 6:30 p.m.
