NORMAN, Okla. -- The 30th-ranked University of Oklahoma men's golf team recorded a two-round 591 (+15) Saturday and sits in eighth place at The Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas. The 54-hole tournament, which is the Sooners' last regular season outing, is being played at the 7,146-yard, par-72 Traditions Club.
Against a stout field (all 12 squads are ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin top 35), OU shot a first-round 295 (+7) and a second-round 296 (+8). The Sooners are 30 strokes behind leader and second-ranked Alabama. One of three Big 12 teams in the event, OU is five shots ahead of Oklahoma State (10th place) and 16 strokes clear of Texas Tech (tied for 11th).
“We did some really good things today,” OU head coach Ryan Hybl said. “Overall, our guys played tough, and we just need to make more putts.”
Sooners' senior Abraham Ancer fired a bogey-free second round and scored a 1-under 71 to counteract a 76 (+4) on the first 18 holes. He is tied for 18th place at 3 over par.
One stroke behind Ancer is junior Michael Schoolcraft, who recorded five birdies in 36 holes en route to a two-round 148 (+4). Schoolcraft shot a first-round 75 (+3) and a second-round 73 (+1), good for a 25th-place tie.
Sharing 38th place, freshman Beau Titsworth and sophomore Michael Gellerman concluded the first 36 holes at 6 over par. Both Sooners fired a 2-over-par 74 in the first round and a 76 (+4) on the second 18 holes.
Sophomore Charlie Saxon, who replaced injured senior Will Kropp in OU's lineup, recorded a two-round 151 (+7) in his first team competition of the spring. Saxon finished at even par in the first round with birdies on holes 12, 14 and 16. He stood at even par through his first 27 holes of the day before shooting 7 over par over the final nine.
“Charlie stepped in nicely this morning coming in for Kropp, and Abe played really solid in the afternoon round,” Hybl said.
The final round of The Aggie Invitational is slated to begin Sunday at 7:30 a.m. from holes No. 1 and No. 10. Live scoring will be available at GolfStat.com.
