Sooners Slam Rival Texas

NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 11 University of Oklahoma men's tennis team opened Big 12 play with a 5-2 win over their rival, No. 16 Texas, at the Headington Family Tennis Pavilion Friday night.
"We played a great match tonight against Texas," OU head coach John Roddick said. "Our doubles was really strong and it was a great momentum builder. Singles was really solid and we did a better job at Court 6."
The Sooners (14-5, 1-0 Big 12) and Longhorns (12-6, 0-1 Big 12) started the match neck-in-neck with each other in doubles.
Lawrence Formentera and Nick Papac won the first match of the evening, beating their opponents 8-6. Costin Paval and Dane Webb clinched the first team point for OU with a win on Court 1. Axel Alvarez Llamas and Guillermo Alcorta finished the doubles portion of the match with a come-behind win at the No. 2 position.
Alcorta extended the Sooners' lead in singles with a win over Lloyd Glasspool, 6-4, 6-2. Paval added onto that with a 7-6 (2), 6-1 win over Soren Hess-Olesen on Court 1.
UT tightened the match after a win on Court 5, when Nick Naumann defeated Peerakit Siributwong 6-4, 6-2.
Not long after that, Webb claimed the match for the Sooners with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniel Whitehead in the No. 3 position. This was the Sooners' third regular-season win in a row over Texas and extended Roddick's record over the Longhorns to 4-1.
The Sooners' added onto their win margin with a win on Court 4 after Alvarez Llamas upset No. 108 Sudanwa Sitaram 6-1, 5-7, 6-2.
The Longhorns brought the final score to 5-2 after David Holiner defeated Papac in a three-set match at the No. 6 position.
The Sooners stay home this weekend for a match against Big 12 newcomers TCU (16-5, 1-0 Big 12) Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m.
