Social networking websites are becoming the preferred method of communication among high school and college students.

Many recruits use social media to market themselves to prominent athletic programs. Sports-related recruiting blogs promote these recruits and try to influence their recruiting decisions.

Recently, high-profile athletes have been contacted by high-profile alumni of various institutions during their recruitment with the intent to persuade them to bring their talents and play for their school of choice.

University of Oklahoma representatives of athletics interests are asked to maintain a sense of propriety when using these social networks. Below are some guidelines to remember when it comes to social networking sites and prospective student-athletes.

Representatives of athletic interests are NOT permitted to use social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Instagram to contact, encourage to attend or otherwise attempt to influence or correspond with prospective student-athletes.

This Includes:
• Posting on a wall
• Commenting on photos of a recruit
• Using the inbox/email feature
• Instant messaging
• "@replies"
• "mentions"
• Direct messaging

As always, your cooperation and understanding is essential to the success of our programs. We hope you find this information helpful, and as always, please contact the Athletics Compliance Department at (405) 325-7004 with any questions. We appreciate your support of OU Athletics and your help in ensuring we operate within NCAA rules and regulations.
