NORMAN, Okla. -- A day after it defeated four ranked teams in the first day of the Clemson Invitational, the University of Oklahoma rowing team battled rough weather conditions to beat another ranked team in the final race in Clemson, S.C. Sunday.
On the weekend, OU boats finished ahead of a total of
13 ranked teams in the twelve races where times were recorded. The Sooners beat five of the eight ranked teams they raced at least once at the Clemson Invite. Oklahoma is receiving votes in the CRCA/US Rowing national poll
Saturday's races featured wins over No. 13 Michigan, No. 18 Louisville, No. 19 Cornell and No. 20 Duke, while OU downed No. 14 Clemson Sunday in addition to Louisville and Duke.
"This weekend was a good test for us against some very good, ranked teams," OU head coach Leeanne Crain said. "Some of our lineups are coming together and racing well, but we still need to find better combinations in a few of our top boats in the next few weeks as we prepare for the conference championships. I continue to be impressed by the fearless spirit of our second varsity eight. They did a great job this weekend."
To begin Sunday's racing, OU's varsity eight finished sixth in 6:58.9. The Sooners were just 0.8 seconds behind fifth-place Michigan State. No. 18 Louisville came in first in 6:46.7.
In the second varsity eight, the Sooners closed a strong weekend of racing with a second-place finish just 2.1 seconds behind No. 19 Cornell. OU crossed the line in 7:11.8, ahead of host-Clemson by 2.1 seconds. In three races this weekend, the second eight beat the 18th-ranked Cardinal and 20th-ranked Blue Devils twice and the No. 14 Tigers and No. 13 Wolverines once.
Before OU's varsity fours and novice eight boats could race, winds on Lake Hartwell began to increase and the boats could not line up properly at the start line. A rolling start was implemented for the remaining races, and results were not recorded.

The Sooners have next weekend off before the conference championship portion of their season. OU will compete for their first Big 12 Championship on May 4 in Kansas City before traveling to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Conference USA Championship on May 18.
